a coat of varnish soon gets rid of the scratches thats the point its wood it can be refinished, and as others have said it adds character, if you want it to look the same for ever get a granite / titanium floor.

green fibre board (insulation) underlay stops it feeling cold ;-)
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

    I've ordered a few samples.

Any thoughts on where to buy an engineered wood floor or underlay at the right price?

Thats the one major problem with real wood, expect to get scratches, dents, dings and cuts in it.

The trick is to get BRUSHED & OILED engineered wood.

The 'brushing' brings out the grain, so you don't have a smooth polished finish, that can make wood look like laminate anyway. It means that slight scratches and dents just look like the grain, so are much less visible. The grain does pick up dirt a bit, but that just seems to enhance the grain effect.
  • You can get reclaimed strip hardwood flooring for around £15-20pm.
Proper 22mm thick stuff, used instead of floorboards between the joist.

It will need a good sand and refinishing, but it will outlive you.

Oh - what do you put on top of the joists? :D
