Just a quick warning first: The F&H Blu-Ray player from ebuyer can probably only be made region free for DVD playback, not Blu-Ray playback, just like other Blu-Ray players. I know people are reporting that the region-free hack worked, but that is probably because a lot of non-UK Blu-Ray discs are not region-restricted anyway. I doubt anyone has checked this properly. Not having firmware updates is a big problem as well, as the newest titles often push the limits of the Blu-Ray specification and need firmware updates to play properly.

All of the above and the fact that it has a noisy fan make £79 for the F&H seem less of a bargain when you can get a known-brand player from a reputable supplier for £99 delivered: The Samsung BD-P1580 from Debenhams.com.

(Most notable feature - if your receiver has DTS but not HD Audio, this player will resample HD Audio at maximum DTS rate and send it down the optical cable - not many budget Blu-Ray players do this)

I spotted this two weeks ago and ordered one. Was originally going to get the Blockbuster deal (£129.99) but didn't want the three free Blu-Rays. Play.com still have it at £119.99. Looked around and Debenhams.co.uk have just reduced it to £99.

Apparently as a new member I'm not allowed to post a link, even though I found a bargain for cheaper than in Martin's Money Tips! Ah well, I guess you'll just have to go and type debenhams bd-p1580 into Google. How long is it before I am trusted to post links???

Use this discount code to get free delivery: SHD1

    Hope someone else enjoys...

The really strang thing is it doesnt come up if you go through the Debenhans folders or the Debenhams search to get there - only if you go direct from outside the site!

For those interested in the deal the link is here:
    http://www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10001_10001_325011934760_-1

and dont forget to use the other codes for further discounts and delivery.
  • Hi,

Found and am buying now a brilliant one on Ebuyer.com; the Sharp BD HP22H is £99.99 and eligible for 5 day free delivery, the same product is currently £249.99 at Argos.

Upscales to 1080p, plays Blu Ray, DVD, CD, JPeg, with BD it will stream from the internet. Great review by five's The Gadget Show.

    Product: ebuyer.com/product/177226
    Review: fwd.five.tv/gadget-show/gadget-news/sharp-bd-hp22h-is-a-deeper-shade-of-blu

Sorry I cant link - apparently my low post score counts me as too new to do this despite having a profile for 3 years.

The above is from the 'Cheap Blu-ray deals discussion' thread and since I posted that another savvy poster has found the same model cheaper (after I bought it!):

I've just purchased a Toshiba regza 37 tv from Amazon for £444 all in. The same tv in Tescos is £599 and in Curry's £649. Also Sainsbury's are doing a Philips home cimena package for £129.99 (It may be cheaper else where but I was in a hurry) add this to one of the better Blue Ray machines and you got yourself a cracking blue ray home cinema system for for £660 all in.

As I said the Philips system HTS3020 is £107.95 on Amazon +delivery.
  • I Just purchased the samsung blue ray dvd player from debenhams for £99. You can get FREE delivery too saving £4, by typing in discount code SH76 at the checkout. This works great. You will be thanking me when you try. Happy Christmas from Gary Wright - Ellesmere Port, Cheshire.:money:

I bought one of the BDP3000 from Asda recently, but I've been unable to get it to connect to my router. So watch out if you're planning on getting one.

I ended up taking mine back to Debenhams - there was a problem with the front panel display saying LOAB instead of LOAD and NO BISC instead of NO DISC, and it wouldn't play Ice Age 1 or 3. I went to Richer Sounds and got a Sony BDP-S360D which is region-unlocked for DVDs for £99.

Still a good deal if you get a working one.

A few have reported networking problems with the Philips, but Philips have promised a firmware update soon - let them know about the problem.

I've been in touch with their online support website and they didn't seem to have a clue - telling me I should disable the firewall in the router. The odd thing is that if I ask it to do a firmware update, it looks like it is downloading something, but the version after is the same!

Is there an option to do a firmware update from a CD or USB key on the BDP3000? I'm not that familiar with it.
