If your hard drives controller is so duff that it prevents the computer from even completing POST, the only way you're going to get data off it is to send it off. The problem is that you can't just send it to any old company - it'll need to go to somewhere that removes the platters and shoves them in another drive. And that's not cheap. Many companies will claim to recover it but IME, anyone charging less than £400-£500 for 20GB tend to make it worse unless it was something you could've done yourself.
It would appear a harsh lesson in backing up is about to be learned.0
