The cheapest you'll be able to get a new Nintendo Wii is £149.99. That package would come with two games (Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort) and one controller.

Here's a link to HMV, though several other retailers offer the Wii at that price:

There are other consoles around the same price point, but the Wii will have the best selection of games for someone in your son's age group.

Though I don't know the prices, if you're looking to spend less than that the Playstation 2 (not 3) can still be bought new.

You can also pick up a lot of new or second-hand games for it very cheaply.

Hopefully someone who knows more about the PS2 can chime in with prices.

The Wii is an excellent bargain, however.
  • If you are on a tight budget and don't think the 7 year old would mind too much if he didn't get a Wii (I come from a spoiled family :p) then I suggest either the PS2 or the Gamecube.

You should probably go for the PS2 as it was the best performer a few years ago and still has new games being released for it today, but personally I'd go for the Gamecube - especially considering some Wii games kids like have predecessors on it.

The PS2 is still sold new but the Gamecube isn't (well there'll still be some sealed boxes on the Internet but you might have to pay a premium for them). I know you said you wanted a new console but you can get a second hand consoles dead cheap with a 1 year warranty. Consider Cex and Gamestation (both in the high street and on the internet) in addition to the more popular shops
  • Best Wii bargain by far that I have come across is Argos currently. They are offering console, sports resort with motion plus, accessory pack, SIMS game and Tiger Woods 09 golf for £180 - saving of £120. Got one myself but cannot get on the bloody telly now!
