Newly plastered ceiling???

I had my ceiling plastered over the weekend, how long before I can paint it and should I use special paint or pva glue, totally confused

drying depends on how warm the house is,

get a tin of cheap emulsion and mix it 50/50 with water and put a couple of coats on to 'seal' it, then use a tin of good stuff and again give a couple of coats,thats how I do it

Dont use glue!!!

Just use Matt paint, thinned down by the amount recommended on the label..

Just to reiterate in bold NO PVA! V. big no-no!
The best paint to use is either Gliddens Contract Matt or Dulux Trade Supermatt (loads of posts on here recommending the two)..both are suitable to paint on recently plastered walls/ceilings. Water down as per instructions on the tin. Most emulsions from the DIY stores contain some vinyl content which is a no-no on drying plaster. Dulux Matt you'd get from DIY store actually is Vinyl Matt and so has vinyl content. Whilst i've got away with it in the past when i was none the wiser, at this time of year it could take weeks for the plaster to fully dry.
Do two coats of the watered down supermatt/contract matt following dilution recommended on the tin (more water for first coat than second), then paint your choice of colour emulsion on top later on.

Had our kitchen ceiling plastered last week. It dried out in about 2 days, then the guys put 2 undercoats on, and finished it off the other day - looks good.

Don't, whatever you do, use Dulux Rich Matt for your mistcoat. It doesn't stick!

Instilled from a young age being the glue commonly used when kids? Don't think it helps that some of the pots of PVA actually suggest it's use for this purpose! There's alot of poor advice on it's use..not just this forum!
Not particularly cheap stuff to be painting over your walls anyway..though not as expensive at the plaster sealer products sold by Dulux etc.

Don't think you can get any matt other than rich matt from the non-trade dulux range. When you read the tubs of rich matt though they do say to use Dulux's New Plaster sealer...takes two coats of the stuff at quite an extortionate price for a small can!

Watered down gliddens contract matt or Dulux Trade Supermatt works out cheaper. Though Gliddens the smallest size is a 10 litre tub. I opted for 5litres of supermatt myself as i didn't need that much and had nowhere to store a big 10L tub.

Quite - thats exactly why I'm warning about using it.

Gliddens, Dulux Trade same same. You pay more for the Dulux brand name.

Indeed some of the DIY store websites are a bit misleading and merely label them Matt on their website..not Rich Matt. I sent OH around to a diy store saying "i want matt..not rich matt" lol - she wasn't too happy coming home empty handed!

The plaster sealer is definitely a con but obviously loads fall for it! I'm not really sure what is in it exactly!

Convenience came into my choice too as B&Q stocked the dulux trade supermatt -longer opening hours etc. Price per litre it was probably more than gliddens but i couldn't justify spending out more at the time for the bigger tub either! If your going to use most of it at some time then yes Gliddens it is. As your watering it down it does go quite a way. One thing i don't like about the Dulux Trade supermatt is it came in a metal tin which is liable to go rusty if not careful - always a bit wary of water-based paints in metal tins..plastic doesn't rust!
