NI Number Fraud - Really need some help

Dear all,

earlier this year, i had a girl living with me for 2-3 months. In October, my employer (pay roll) has made me aware of the fact that the Tax office has another persons name and address against my National Insurance Number, which I have been holding sind June 2002.
I was completely stunned and then realised that is was name of the girl that used to live with me.
I have informed Nantional Insurance Office in writing about this including proof of my details (Copy of passport, utility bill and copy of NI number card). I have also rung HMRC, but didnt get anywhere as I failed security bacause this other person's details are against my NI number. Almost 2 month have now gone past since I was first alerted and absolutely nothing has happened. I rang both NI and HMRC to see whether they had an update for me. Nothing.

NI services said they would write to her and ask her details etc etc. But if she doesnt reply, they apparently wont be able to do anything!
I can't believe that you can just ring up and say oh I have changed my name and address without any questions being asked or proof to be presented!?:eek::eek:

I have just rung her employer and will inform her HR department of matter.
I have also informed the Benefit Fraud Hotline and hopefully they will investigate.
I am sorry, but all this is a going far to slow for my liking considering she is fraudulently using my details.

My HR department has advised me to take this to the next level, should I not hear anything soon. My question is, who do I write to, where can I go? The Ombudsman?

I would really appreciate any constructive advise on this and how can I raise this with Martin himself?

Many thanks in advance - I am at the end of my tether.

  • Obviously we don't know the full background, but you seem pretty sure this hasn't happened by mistake. If so, I'd report it to the police as identity theft without delay. Take the evidence from the payroll department (i.e. her name and address against your NI number) and proof of your identity and just insist that it's investigated urgently. Get advice on what else you need to do (check your credit reports, for one thing, in case she's used your details for anything else).

Thank you very much for your advise.
For some reason, I didnt really think this is a matter for the police, but looks like I better visit my local police station asap.

    Thanks very much.

Are you sure that's the only thing she stole from you? Get a copy of your credit record from experian, consider registering with CIFAS and find identity theft websites that will give you info on what else she may have intercepted and used.
