its spring for garlic! they must know this as I have had this prob too!
as for getting garlic smell off your hands - I run my hands under the tap then rub a stainless steel spoon (doesnt have to be a spoon) between my hands - rinse and the garlic smell is gone!.
  • Garlic is one of the items I'm trying to grow on the veg patch this year as over the last year not ony has the quality noticeably deterioated in my local shops but the price has shot up something chronic!!!!!

It's like basics flour and value baked beans- a store cupboard standby that has doubled in price in recent times.

I have an unglazed ceramic garlic pot for storage, but it's not much good if the bulbs are already forming green shoots in the shop. I now buy it to use straight away, whereas in previous years I'd store it for months. They've been like this since about September in my locality and I've tried lots of different retailers to no avail. I personally think crops may have failed and we are being sold (fobbed off with) as "fresh" stock that's a year or two old. Isn't Autumn when they are traditionally planted?

I'm ashamed to say I went to the Aisian grocers and bought a tub of powdered garlic to use in some recipes to help keep costs down. 500g for £3 and you only need 1/2 a teaspoonful. I use the powdered garlic for things like stews and pasta sauces keeping the fresh stuff for studding roasts etc. It helps keep the cost and my frustration levels down a bit as I love garlic. I doubt the powdered stuff has the health benefits though.

the birds are singing, the mornings are lighter, my snowdrops are flowering, the garlic is greener - does this all add up to mean spring it on its way? Hoorah - I love spring.

If it is a problem with all the garlic you are buying at the mo, then I think it is a good idea to go to an Asian grocers and buy some 'lazy garlic' in a jar. Much cheaper than what you would get from one of the big supermarkets.
I haven't noticed this problem with my garlic, but then I always buy a big bag from the Asian grocer, peel and whizz it in the FP and then store it in a jar in the fridge with a wee bit of oil. Any extra gets frozen in ice cube trays then bagged so I never now have garlic that goes all dry and wrinkly!

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

    Please be careful with that!

I dont remember garlic being this bad. Recently all garlic I have bought and used almost immediately has really thick green shoots in the middle. I have to take them out and it makes my fingers smell for days!

Is anyone else having this problem?

Why do you have to take them out?
    They taste perfectly garlicky.

it makes the garlic bitter and acrid, takes away the warmth of garlic

i dont like 'lazy' garlic, i find it tastes odd... i think its the vinegar or acid thats mixed with the oil
