At your age and from the description you give the most common cause will be a benign fluid filled cyst ( or quite a few). They will usually show on a mammogram and an ultrasound scan will confirm this.
  • Do you know if they will just do a mammo on the breast I have been referred for or both?

With me it was both - and I got an appointment within the week. The doctor found an additional two lumps all in the same breast to the one I found myself. The care and attention was excellent.

I was a bit younger at the time and after the mammogram (which is painful but only lasts seconds) I was referred for an ultrasound. They then did a needle biopsy. This all took place the same day. Everyone was so courteous I really did feel reassured. (Had I been a private patient I'm not sure the facilities would all have been available at the one time and it was great not to have to go back and forward to the hospital, worrying in between appointments).

In the end I was diagnosed with fibroadenomas - explained to me as "just lumpy, nothing to worry about but keep an eye on them".

Really couldn't fault the NHS care.

    Fingers crossed for you.

    .

I am glad it wasn't a worse diagnosis for you, but it must be a difficult thing to keep an eye on!

In our breast unit, at your age, both breasts will be mammogrammed. It will be to compare the lumpy side with the 'normal' one. Both sides may have ultrasound too.
  • I was referred, seen by a consultant, and then had a mammogram/ultrasound within 3 weeks. My mammogram was last wednesday- I had both boobs done, straight into u/s, reassured, and out within the hour.

The staff were brilliant. Good luck, hope yours is as smooth as mine. :)

  • Just wanted to update you, as I had the clinic appointment today.

Everything is ok, which is a wonderful relief!! :j

I was examined by consultant first, then had a mammo which really hurt (but I do suffer with painful breasts) I also had to have an ultrasound initially on the left breast (lump was in right!) because something was not too clear on mammo. (panic!) When I mentioned lump was in right he had a look and said everything looked fine.
Consultant recommended taking evening primrose for the pain.
