Thanks for all your points. I think I have just gone into panic mode and am afraid the doc will just tell me to go away. It is a new doctor I have never seen before so I have no idea what to expect from him. I am 46 so hopefully it will just turn out to be some peri - menopausal lump!

Brand new doctor or new to the surgery? either way they should be trying to gain patient confidence and support so I'd have thought be more willing to help you out!

Have not had breast problems myself but do have other ongoing medical problems I'm trying to get resolved. I got fobbed off the first four times. It was only after seeing a personal trainer, a dietitian friend and a friend who has medical knowledge (all seen for other reasons) who all prompted me to go back to my doctor by saying they really thought my problems (which are very obvious to see) were needing medical treatment and at the least, to rule things out which the doctors had refused to do and demand to be sent through to the appropriate department.

If your unhappy with the response you get, a second and even third opinion is possible!

Can i ask how long between routine mammograms.?

I had one in 2006 not a routine one but they said i was about the right age (36 at the time) to be routinely checked. And would now be in the system

Routine mammograms start at age 50 unless you are already within the breast screening programme. The frequency will depend upon the risk level, current guidelines and / or your age.

I have an annual mammogram because of my family history, and have had regular mammograms via the screening programme since 2005, but have been attending a breast clinic for cyst treatment since 1997.

Dr has referred me and said I should get a phone call within a week offering me an appointment in the next two weeks, only hope I can get seen before xmas! She was surprised that with my family history I am not already in a screening programme, she also said she was more concerned with all 'the little lumps' she could feel and not my 'larger' one!

Sounds to me like she could have put things a bit better!!!

Remember that the vast vast vast majority of these things do turn out to be innocent. It's just that you only ever hear about all the ones that are nasty.

Try not to panic too much over the next few days - but I know that's easier to say than to do!
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
