hey guys just a quick question i've overclocked my pc to 3513mhz (3.5Ghz).

the rig:
intel core 2 duo E7400 2.8Ghz standard (on a standard heat sink and fan) OCZ FREEZE thermal paste OC'd to 3.5Ghz

Kingston hyperX 1066mhz gameing memory DDR2 4GB @ 1069mhz

FSB is set to auto in bios.

Asus p5q mobo.

XfX Nvidia 9800 gtx graphics card.

JEANTEC UNICORN case with 5 RED LED akasa fans with speed control 1 large fan being the exhaust fan at rear room temp is 26oC PC is reguarly maintained to keep dust free.

samsung 32" hd tv via hdmi.

windows7 ultimate 64bit.

the problem i have is temp monitoring what is the best utility?

Speed fan v4.39 shows cpu temps down at CPU:20oC core0: 37oC core1:40oC system temp (the temp in the case): 44oC wich is ok
but
nvidia system monitoring shows both cores at tj temp 105oC (mobo is not Nvidia but intel chipset P45).
i have run the pc OC'd for a long time now just over 9 months the system is quick and have no faults, i play online games and the temps hardly shift give a degree or two after 8 or 9 hours game play and passed hours of benchmark tests, have had no BSOD whatsoever or failed attempts to boot. wich temps do i trust?

also i have 2GB Giel black dragon 800mhz memory (not installed) would there be any problems in installing it if i under clock my kingston 4GB to 845Mhz and overclock the geil memory to 845mhz also to give me 6GB overall?
Geil black dragons dont like to be overclocked so setting them at 845 is about right with the given cpu frequency if my maths are correct.

  • I use Coretemp. What does that report?

core temp reads tj max 100oC (i think this is the max temp thresh hold before burn up) and cores the same as speedfan! thats two that reads the same - speed fan says nout about TJ MAX temps.

I run an overclocked E4300 and use Speedfan and coretemp. Coretemp consistently shows temps about 5 degrees cooler than Speedfan.

I trust Coretemp more as I have the BIOS temp alert set to 70 degrees and if I run it without adequate cooling the alram goes when Speedfan is showing 75 degrees but Coretmep shows 70 degrees.

BTW I wouldn't rely on th nVidia tool if it's not an nVidia motherboard.
It's my problem, it's my problem

ok temps aside that part confirmed i can trust what it says lol.
can anyone elaborate with this idea any good in doing this or no.
  • Won't the Nvidia System Monitor only work correctly with the NForce chipset, rather than the Intel one you have on your motherboard?

use it mainly to monitor the graphics card temps more acurately as its overclocked too :p speed fan reads the temps as burning up at 50+ but 9800's operating temp is about 55oC nvidia SM shows it as being normal and the burn up temp is about 80oC-110oC on these cards.

OP, do yourself a favour and get a decent heat sink... Overclocking on a standard heatsink really is a bad idea.
Ubuntu is an ancient African word, meaning: 'I can't configure Debian'.

I mainly use GPU-Z to look at the temperatures of my graphics card, never been that big a fan of the manufacturers own tools.
  • realtemp is my fave for CPU :)
    GPU-Z for gpu (I have the same card as you - running @ 810core 100% load ~50 degrees :) )

...and don't bother adding the geil..the extra 2gb isn't worth the clock-drop imo

thats why i monitor the temps closely the heatsink and fan are doing fine coupled with the case fans and thermal paste i saw a 10oC drop in temps with the OCZ freeze thermal paste and was only a £5 for it. and have run the pc ocd for around 9 months if it was going to burn would of by now i think.

after new year will be going water cooled with aqua cool. (cutting holes in case is required:p) and a quad extream installed with an asus rampage mobo 2Xgtx 200 series cards and 2 solid state hard drives 500gb each 16GB mem, Bluray dvdr-RW optical drive. hopefully be completed by this time 2011 all given my money troubles are done and dusted April.
