changing suppliers on new flat

Hello,

I get the keys to my new place in a few weeks :money:it has been empty for about month now while the landlord spruces it up.

The current supplier is BG who I refuse to go with. I want to change but am I best waiting until I am actually in there or can i do it straight away? i dont want to give them any money!

thanks!

That may be difficult unless you are prepared to go without gas & leccy for about 6 weeks of your tenancy. ;)
If that is your plan, make sure you are on a no standing charge tariff too.

Hi myothercarisaferrari - On the day you move in, READ ALL THE METERS YOURSELF, do not rely on the figures given by the LL or the Letting Agent

Once BG have registered you as the customer at that address you can move supplier, but you really need annual consumption figures to do it for the best deal, which you won't have. So it may be best to stay with BG for the first Qtrly winter bill which will give a figure on which to guess the annual figures. - A rough rule of thumb for a property with GCH is that your Elect Bill will go up by 20% in winter, and your Gas bill will drop to 20% in summer.

For the first 28 days in a property, you are on a 'deemed contract' with the old supplier. But you can apply for a change of supplier from day 1.

Ideally you should be reading them together with the LL/LA and recording them on the inventory/statement of condition that you then both sign and keep copies of on the day you take over the property. :)
