Anti spyware malware

Hi, can someone recommend a good free anti malware spyware program please. I have succesfully talked a friend through removing a nasty malware attack - Antivirus live inc which played havoc with their computer. Have also run a full scan with Malwarebytes and removed infected files. I now need to get them to install some software to prevent this happening again. I am currently using Spyware Terminator which has worked for me but I believe Spybot is also good but I'm not sure which is best.

Any advice would be appreciated.

BE VERY CAREFUL. I googled this and the first website in the list comes up with a VIRUS! luckily protected by Avast. link is Microsoft.Security-Essentials.info.

This second item seems to be guenuine but is this antivirus and malware? and will it run along side Avast?

Will this also work on windows XP?

I use Spybot Search and Destroy along with Spyware Blaster. They seem to work for me.
