Hi I am looking for a digital camera for my teenage son. We have about £70-80 to spend, and are looking for a decent MP, optical & digital zoom. What do people recommend at present?

To cut down on the range of factors you should note:
1) forget entirely about digital zoom; it has almost no value whatever (read up on it if you don't believe me!)
2) most modern cameras capture more than enough pixels, unless you want to print at A3 size or bigger
3) optical zoom can be very useful, but 3x isn't much of a zoom. Think around 8x or 10x - if you really need to zoom properly. (Well worth getting someone to show you their high-zoom camera).
4) consider if a wide-view camera is of interest
As you say, there are even more models than for PCs/laptops/netbooks/...0 -
You will not get a 'big zoom' (i.e. bigger than x3) for this price range, so its best to forget about that. Personally i'd go for something from a reputable brand - like the Nikon L20 or the Canon A480

From the sample images i've seen in reviews, i'd go for the Nikon myself0 -
I bought a small cheepo 6 meg camera a few years ago. I recently needed to take some pics of a large room partially lit by sunlight but mainly quite dark, without flash. I accidentally printed them out as A3 pics. Under a mag glass I could see no pixalations. They both came out superbly. My point is this; manufacturers are running out of things to put on cameras now and are 'upping the megs' to ridiculous heights, I've seen 12 megs!! Do not simply by a camera because of advertised megs, 6 or 8 max is adequate, even for A3 prints.0

I've got an old Canon Ixus; it's 5mp and still produces some amazingly nice photos
Some of the bigger manufacturers are now dropping the megapixels, since it reduces your noise levels.0 -
Make sure the camera has a rechargeable (Li-ion) battery. Normal disposable will last 5 minutes, and cost you a fortune over time.0
