Roof slate/gable end/barge board/hole.

Where the roof slates meet the gable end above the barge boards of my house, a hole/gap has appeared under one slate and I can see chunks of something lying on the flat roof of my attached garage. Is it cement ?
We hope to fix it ourselves as it is accessible by ladder and would like to know what to fill the gap with before the sou'westerlies take the roof off. .thanks.

You might get a better response if you can post a picture.
Edit: I would suspect its mortar but dont much about roofs0 -
Before they introduced proper gable edging tiles it was normal to point in between the bottom of the tile and the barge board. It is quite normal for bits of this mortar to fall out on occasion. Easy enough to replace, the main problem is likely to be access as gables can be quite high up.
You can get after market moulded plastic covers which attach to the edge of the gable and hide the mortar permanently.Mortared gable end. The white marks are the heavy rainGable end with covering mouldings..I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
If it is slated it will be mortar, pretty sure you dont get end caps for natural slates.
a bit of mortar with some black colouring in it0 -
Nice pics. there 27col, glad I got my terminology right.
AJmair, good thought about the colouring. I've got a small bag of ready-mix mortar, do you think bonfire ash would ad the colour ?0 -
DRY VERGE pointing normally comes out when frost , rain and high wind has done its bit. Your readymix might be a bit weak, but add PVa or addmix may help. You will use a lot though as the hole may go back 2-3". Soot may work, worth a try but colours are available, if you think you need to darken it?????
End caps are pretty useless on slate and they should be fixed to the roof slats which may be rotten. Big job to remove slates replace dry verge , slats and cement, so a quick fix probably better0
