pet insurance getting authorisation

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and would appreciate some advice if anyone could help. My dog has recently been been ill and was referred to a specialist who has told us he requires an operation that will cost around £7000, luckily (or not) I am insured as there is no way I have this kind of money to pay out myself. My problem is I'm quite sceptical of insurance and so asked the insurance company to authorise my claim prior to my dog having the op. As I'm always thinking about worse case scenarios I could imagine him having surgery then the insurance refusing to pay out for some reason or another. Problem is they just keep saying they dont authorise claims over the phone and I need to submit the claim after the treatment. The condition my dog has can be treated non surgically but won't cure the problem and would get slowly worse. Any experience with something similair to my problem? Or any advice on how to get the insurance to give me some kind of agreement in principle? I have checked my policy but as ever there are some various 'loosley phrased' exclusions in there and considering the amount of the claim I'm sure they will be looking for reasons not to pay. At the end of the day, I just need to know one way or the other so that my dog can get the treatment surgical or not. Thanks in advance.

If there are any loosely phrased exclusions then the FOS or the courts will apply what is best interpritation for the consumer rather than the insurer.
Pet claims is not an area that I have had the most to do with but I would imagine that the vet provided information combined with common practice is going to be a strong steer for them on if this is required surgery or something you are electing to do. As the vet to confirm if most dogs with the condition have the surgery or not etcAll posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Some company's do pre-auth's, you need to speak to your vet in regards to this I believe0
