do you have to BT at the time of opening the card - or can you do it a bit after??

As the title says really - must all BT's be done at the time of application, or can you transfer the money from other credit cards later (within the 0% offer)

I would like to have the card (0%) in my hand before asking my OH to give me his details for transferring his debt so I can take the card off him and no more spendings!!!

You can do this later, but some CCs have restrictions. For example, (Lloyds TSB Amex):

0% for 9 months on balances transferred within 6 weeks after we open your account
