Where in rome are you staying?
I stayed near to the Spanish Steps. You just walk through the streets there and find bars and bistros in the back streets of all the big label shops.
http://www.enjoyrome.com/index.html is a good site for general info.
http://www.romaturismo.com/v2/allascopertadiroma/en/ristorazione.html recommends foodie places.
When I went with my girlfriends, we chatted to a young female italian bus conductor, she recommended a few places ten minutes out of town ( on via galvani ), there was alot of night life there. The italians don't start to party til 11pm onwards.
Always good to ask the locals.
Hope this has been of some help.

The beauty of Rome is that one visit is never enough. Go to the Trevi Fountain and throw your three coins in... you will have to go back then!

Rome is soooo laid back.... just play it by ear and try not to make too many plans ahead of time. I went in march with some girlfriends and enjoyed the nightlife, then went back in December with my family to do more of the sights.... the sistine chepel, pantheon, bocco della verita (from Roman Holiday - were audrey Hepbern thinks her hand is gonna get bitten off) ( A good film to watch before you go)
just relax and enjoy the atmosphere.... its wonderful.... I love the place.
