I have just had a quote from a carpet fitter for the stairs and a very small landing (no carpet needed in the hallway) the carpet is £6.69 per square yard he has quoted £160 without underlay and £212 with underlay. In the shop window it says £20 fitting of any room, when I queried the price he said the fitting is £55, I have the advert that says £20 any room. I asked how many square yards I needed and he said off the top of his head he thinks its about 15 square yards ... he only measured up yesterday, any advice welcome please

I know it costs more to fit carpet to stairs; they are not a room as such so won't be included in the £20 offer. I would go back tot hte shop and tell them you want to get them to do it for the £55 quoteed.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The amount of carpet you need to buy may not be simply the yardage to be covered. There may be significant waste. My hall is 16' by 4.5' (9' at one end - L shaped).
To avoid a join, I bought 16' of carpet that was 13' wide. A lot of waste.
£55 to fit seems reasonable. The fitters are usually self-employed and have to cover their overheads.
Besides, you can't be ripped off if they quote you first.

As silvercar mentions, stairs & landings are not classed as rooms & will always be more expensive to have carpet fitted on them as opposed to rooms.
The £55 you were quoted sounds incredibly reasonable, so I think you are being offered a good deal there. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Sounds like an excellent deal to me. We have just had lounge, hall stairs and landing recarpeted. The lounge took about hour and half to fit. The small hall stairs and small square landing took 3 hours to fit.
Also had spare carpet which i have now cut to the size i want and having it edged. So hardly any waste. When life gives you a hundred reasons to cry, show life that you have a thousand reasons to smile0 -
If you're not happy with the quote why don't you get another quote from somewhere else?0

We've just had a new carpet in our bathroom and that was about £30 for fitting so i think your quote is very reasonable.0
