I need some advise - in sept 08 I had a very nasty experience in a house share which ended in a massive row and me leaving the property in about 3 weeks anyway I managed to move to a much better place 0ct 08 where I have been residing ever since. Today I receive a bill from Buchananclark & Wells debt collections advising that I owe money to E-ON from December 08 to 01/08/2009 when I wasn't even there! I have my Tenancy agreement for this property and plus my name on the council tax bills -
Is there any advise anyone can give me?
Also do you know what requirements companies need to take when they are changing names on bills?

The matter is now in the hands of a Debt Collection Agency(DCA) and they are only interested in getting the money, not the moral issues involved.
If you were not in the property in December 2008, simply write(never ever phone) to the DCA with a copy of your current Tenancy agreement and Council tax bill covering the period from 2008.
You shouldn't have to prove your innocence in these matters, but for the sake of a letter it will save a lot of hassle and possible a black mark on your credit record.
All the same check your credit record after the matter is resolved.
When you move from a property you should always notify the utility companies you have left, as you can always find yourself 'jointly and severally liable' for bills - which means that they can come after you for the whole bill.0 -
Yes thank you I think thats the best way - thing is I never put my name on any bills thats the thing. I contacted the electric company who said the name was changed on dec 08 when I wasn't even there I dread to think how many other bills have been put in my name - I really hope this doesn't affect my Credit Rating I have worked so hard to make it better.
I've been told it might be worthwhile going to a solicitor and signing and affidavit. I just can not believe this country the fact that anyone can call up and put bills in your name its beyond a joke!0 -
You are looking here at identity theft and fraud - do take care of all of your proof of residence elsewhere. It may be in your interests now to go to the police.annasophiaw wrote: »Yes thank you I think thats the best way - thing is I never put my name on any bills thats the thing. If it any help to put your mind at rest the same thing happened to me in 2001. the first i knew was when westcott DCA sent me a bill, i sent them a copy of my tenancy that started in 1999 and it was setted. it never showed on my credit report.0

Hi annasophiaw,
I agree with DVardysShadow on this.
If you contact E.ON with the tenancy agreement of the property in dispute and the tenancy agreement for the property you moved to, there should be enough information to allow us to amend our records.
Once amended the DCA will be contacted and they will put a stop on action against you.
The tenancy agreement for the property you moved into may not suffice on it's own as it doesn't disprove that you may have held multiple residence.
The original tenancy details will show who else is liable for the period in question.
Would it also be possible to get something from the Landlord/Letting Agents to also reinforce that you left the property in October 2008?
