CC charge recovery + Default removal

Hi, I've been a Capital One customer since early 2003 and have never had a real problem with repayments except for a few late payments by not having a direct debit setup. My fault and at the time I was quite cool with it.
Approx. 8 months ago I got into a bit of trouble due to late payment again but this added to my account and took me over my limit and then it snowballed a bit.
I couldn't make the full payment to bring the account back into limit and got charged again for late payment and over limit. Unfortunaltley I needed just over three months to clear the debt and get back to normal, which of course took me over the 3 month and lead to a default.
Now Capital One have sent my account to another agency SCP or something (sounds like they are just another dept of Capital One to be honest) who want to recover the full amount.
So far I have refused and kept paying Capital One through standing order, no payments have been rejected.
I now discover I have a default on my credit profile which is a bad thing. I keep up with my house payments, car payment, Council Tax etc. but a crappy £20 debt has ruined my rating.
Now I was happy to leave my charges go thinking it is more hassle than worth to get them returned. I am now wondering that it may be worth claiming them and using it as vehicle to get the default removed in the process. That is my pure interest rather than the money reclaim!!
Is this worth doing? In my mind, the default was placed using incorrect information.
Any help appreciated.
