Do cloves help with toothache?

Hi all,
Can anyone give any advice on using cloves to help with toothache? Do you have to suck them, or just stick them down inbetween gums and lips or do something else with them?
My better half is suffering and thought you lot would be able to advise
Any tips would be appreciated!
