Comet - returns policy

Went into Comet yesterday to return an unwanted gift (how many radio alarm clocks does a girl need??!) and was completely flabbergasted when the assistant point blank refused to allow me to exchange it for anything else as I didn't have the receipt. The box was still sealed and bore a Comet security tag but she was adamant that there was nothing she could do. Is this their normal policy? I know shops are under no obligation to refund or exchange items that aren't faulty but I can't remember ever being faced with such crass customer services from a major retailer.
Guess who I'll be boycotting from now on... :-[

I bought a stereo last year for 130, the day after it was reduced to half price, i was so annoyed i took the stereo back, i had opened it but used the excuse that the sound quality was bad. The manager came to see me and said it couldn't be exchanged or refunded cause i'd opened it, i said how do i know how it sounds if i don't play it!!!!It took about 20 mins of "discussion" when i told him that in a different area of the country it was half price on the day he sold it me for full price (something i thought up on the spur of the moment) in the end he reluctantly gave me the difference back in cash but wasn't impressed with Comet's customer service! he had an attitude before i'd even opened my mouthThey call me Mr Pig!0

Found this on comet's website:
Refunds and exchanges
Unopened products
If you bought a product, or received it as a gift, and decide that you do not require it you can return it to any Comet store within 28 days of delivery for a full refund, as long as the packaging is unopened.
Therefore I think you should be OK to return, it doesnt mention anything about having the receipt...
Why not telephone their head office and discuss with them direct, then get something in writing to say that you can return it and march back to the store and demand a refund!!!!0
