smelly dishwaher.....

Options
Why does it smell and what do you do to make any smell go away?. Mine is fairly new (6 months old) and I ALWAYS rinse the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher – so there is no food residuals in there. However it is starting to make a smell now when you open them.

What can you do?

    HI

I have exactly the same problem! I bought a Dishwasher air freshner a month or so ago and it did work. It must need changing though as it is just starting to smell again!!

You can buy the Air Fresheners for them in Tescos - at least its a temporary solution.

Love to know what causes it though !

  • Isn't there a filter in there that gets clogged up and needs to be cleaned out every once in a while?

Tried that, but still no joy (there was no dirts in the filter either!
  • the waste hose of a dishwasher must go into a trap this seals the smell from the drain.
Also if the hose connected under a sink, it should be raised up so that the hose, at its highest point, is above the highest water level of the sink, if not dirt dish water will run into the DW.

Have you got a rinse only cycle? I only actually run my dishwasher every 3 days or so, but use the rinse only cycle once a day to freshen it up. I also use a squirt of lemon juice every so often which seems to make it smell nice.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

Well here’s my two pence worth.
Even though the insides of the washer gets a regular washing with hot water and detergent there are little nooks and crannies that attract grease, odd bits of food sticks to the grease and decays, hence smell.
There are three places in our washer that do this, on the small removable filter, the underside of the large filter grill in the bottom and worse of all behind the door seals.
You could try a Finish Dishwasher Cleaner which works very well but it only cleans where it can get to, alas the only real solution is to remove as many bits you can and give em a good scrub in the sink with washing up liquid!
    Ironic isn’t it?
I love my spell checker, it stops me making all sorts of stupid smelling mistakes.

thats exactly what I do. Every 2/3 weeks strip the insides and give the whole inside and stripped parts a good wash, it only takes about 5 mins. Never had any sort of smell but do get gritty bits every 2/3 weeks hence the good clean.

I clean all the removeable bits every few weeks and a few times a year I run the empty DW on the hottest cycle to give it a really good clean.
We do not rince the plates before they go in, DW on most days, do not use a DW freshener and our DW does not smell.

Put some soda crystals in and run it empty, then shove half a lemon in the cutlery holder.
