Can we claim?

Just wanting to sound things out at the moment and get an idea if we can claim any tax credits if we need them in the future (I sincerely hope we won't though).
DH and I are due to have our first baby in May and I will be giving up paid work to look after him/her, probably until he/she starts school. DH works full-time (earns around £40,000 a year gross) and I currently work less than 16 hours a week by choice. As I'm a temp, my hours and income are erratic and I may not qualify for Statutory Maternity Pay, only Maternity Allowance. Either way, I won't get the full rate, just the 90% of earnings (which will be low). I know that we can claim Child Benefit, but this is for the little one only (IMHO). I'm fairly sure we will be ok on hubbie's salary, but I just wondered if there is other help if we need it.
I did look at entitledto.com, but that assumes SMP/MA is paid as if you worked 16 hrs or more.
