Credit card company charging for paypal

play.com
0% purchases until april
1% cashback

I didnt know this happened with my card, i had heard about it tho...

i have just noticed that MBNA have added interest to my account and when asked, they said it was paypal, i dont think this happened originally, as the first month i made transactions on paypal and got no interest charged!

can anyone enlighten me on this?

is this typical/normal? and/or is there any way to still pay on paypal without getting this charge?

Did you make a purchase on paypal e.g. ebay.
Or did you send some money over?

Just trying to establish if it's a normal purchase or whether it's anything that might be classed as a money transfer or cash advance.

natwest charge you too, something about foreign transaction
  • is it perhaps paypal is based in luxembourg so charged as foreign trans fee??
  • Never been charged but technically it may be seen as a cash advance so better switch my paypal to a current account.

I used my MBNA card for Paypal / eBay on Nov 17th and no interest has been charged on the statement

I haven't been charged but I have noticed that recently on my statement they say Singapore and I'm buying stuff from UK sellers (most recently one in my own town).

My advice to the OP would be to ask MBNA why they have charged this in November and not in October.

I am not being charged on AMEX or Egg and that's very recent e.g. yesterday.

So to ask a broader question, how do you know in advance whether your CC company is going to treat the transaction as a cash advance?

I settle my balance in full every month, but I discovered the hard way that Capital One charges me cash advance interest to top up the balance for my work canteen (it works like an Oyster card), but doesn't for my TfL Oyster card or Paypal. It doesn't make sense.
