Urgent Help Please - Netgear Probs!

Boo Hoo,

Have bought some Netgear equipment for a wireless network to try to make my job easier by being around the kids whilst still working!!

Trouble is although the main box (router)? attached to the desktop works and also the wirelesscard thingy in the laptop works ( it picked up a signal recently when staying in a hotel all by itself)

they will not talk to each other in the house :-((

Am now at my wits end....can anybody help me set this damn thing up please

Equipment is as follows

Main Box is Netgear DG834 GT
laptop card is WG5111T

Also have but not used yet a USB WG111T

Cheers

Pete

What wont talk... The laptop and desktop?? If so you will need to enable sharing for any hard drives or folders you wish to share.

Select the drive / folder you want to share with a right mouse click. Select properties then sharing and enable it.

As for the WG111T.... this will have problems under XP if you upgrade to the latest drivers.. It doesnt support any WPA/WEP protocall and will disconnect randomly. There are workarounds but still not 100%. Stay with the 1.1/1.2 drivers... The range isnt as good but at least they are secure without dropping out
  • You should have a Green Laptop Icon in the system tray (by the clock) Double Click on this then click on the Networks Tab. The click on Scan, does it see your router in there? There will be a Hexidecimal number in the form of 00:AB:CD:EF:00:00, check this against the MAC Address on the bottom of the router. Also can you see any other networks listed?

Ignore the angel there smileys are misreading my text!

Laptop is consistantly scanning and finding nothing!!

like i explained before, went away in Feb and took laptop to do some document work. I had only just bought the card so imagine my surprise when the icon changed from red to green and i could connect to the net for free!

i assumed it would be the same when i got home but no such luck! icon on laptop stays constantly red with the system just constantly scanning and finding nothing....

    !!!!!!

    anybody anymore info?

if its a help, desktop is running XP home and laptop is running windows NT

    Cheers

You did not explain your problem well in first post... Have you activated wireless connections in the router?... Have you made sure SSID is enabled? have you selected the correct connection mode for your wireless (g&b, 108only)? What drivers are you using?? Are you using the Netgear connection Utility or the windows one? can you see any networks at all?

    ScoOter,

am a complete novice to be honest.

I know that there is a webpage something like 192.168.0.0 ? to get to the netgear stuff on a webpage, as for the rest of it... I have no idea!!

    Cheers

Click here --> http://192.168.0.1 from the wired connection and log in to the router's web config pages. The user name is admin and the password is password (unless you've changed them). Click on Wireless Settings and make sure Wireless Access Point is enabled and Allow Broadcast of SSID is enabled. Tick the boxes if not and click Apply.
