Have repaired my Cat D Megane as it was uneconomical to repair, this is because Renault quoted £3k, i got it done by a mate who works in a bodyshop nice and cheap but a quality job.

What do i have to do next, told just need to renew MOT but have read numerous posts etc but all differ. DVLA/VOSA are worse than useless!

Thanks in advance

I've been through this last year.
I had a lovely VW Golf VR6 which was written off, can you believe it, for 2 doors that needed doing, as some nasty little scrote tried to nick it. But that was all!!!!

Anyhoo, I got the car back from the insurers, got them to pay me out and I spent the money repairing the car.

In the meantime, the insurers should have informed DVLA via the write off database and you will either get, or will be asked to get a new V5 form. If you have given any paperwork to your insurer they should have sent it off for you.

If not, I expect you need to speak to DVLA and tell them; then get it re-MOT'd. They will send you a new V5 form in the post which will say on the front "damaged repaired, Cat D" (or words to that effect, can't remember what they said exackerly on mine ;) )

The car will be legal once it's MOT'd (and insured of course :) )

If you have done all of this without going through the insurers, how did it get to 'write off' category?

Went through insurers. How would i fund out if they have actually put it on database, ie: To just check that database and not finance etc would be cheaper i'd of thought

The pre accident MOT is valid until it’s normal expiry date as is the tax. Assuming both are still current and you have insurance then you can drive it.

If the insurance company took the V5 off you as part of the claim then you either need to get it back or apply to DVLA for a replacement but you can still use the car in the meantime.

No need to get a new MOT until the old one runs out

    Have a look here:

    http://www.autocheck.co.uk/write-off-categories.html

I paid a couple of quid to make sure the car was registered as a write off

Sorry, yes of course your MOT is valid (I forgot as my MOT ran out whilst the car was sat in the 'salvage yard' when the insurers were messing me about big time, so I had to have mine done anyway! Grr!)

From reading the above, as the car was repaired by me it will not be on that database:

Will previous accident damage be recorded?

We will only show accident damage if the vehicle has been subject to a total loss claim through an insurance company. If the vehicle has been damaged but repaired by the insurance company or the owner, then there will be no record of it.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks

    Thanks vaio,

Do you know where this is on any official or Government type site?

    Cheers

Check with your Insurers as although the current MOT may be legally valid some (Not all) will want you to obtain a new mot on the car which is there way of ensuring the repairs have been carried out to a roadworthy standard
