I have just had a quote for a combi boiler off BG. Went through the breakdown of costs and noticed that they were going to charge me £186 to brick up the hole from the old boiler about 12" x 12". Told him he was having a laugh, "standard charge" was the reply. How many people have been charged this amount in the last year, local brickie quoted £40.00. Just asked local company to fit one for me. Even with BG offer at the moment, 33% off until 31.7.10 he was still cheaper, and comes recommended from a few people.

BG are one of the most expensive installers

A swap ... like for like boiler - Many installers double the price of the boiler and add a bit on. boiler is 800 pound install total 2k

There are a few gas fitters in our area that only do boiler swap outs as its easy money and quick.

If you want it cheap phone every gas fitter on the gas safety register near you. Sooner or later you will get one that is cheap.

They do not have to veiw the job, if they are any good they will give you a ball park figure or average price.(some will refuse to give a ball park cause they want the foot in the door for leverage, just tell them there is no point in wasting there time and yours)

With that figure you can get a proper quote.

Am I being ripped off? (it feels like it)
British Gas came to quote for a new Combi Boiler the other day. Ps my house was built in 1981 (so is modern), 2 bedrooms + 1 "box" room, standard semi.
I thought 2-3 grand maybe. Nearly fell of the chair when the sales guy added it all up! £4,740.01! Yes, then penny may have pushed me over the edge. I was told the quote was a little bit higher because I wanted to go on their new INTEREST FREE offer!
Advice, don't bother! The interest free is a con. I checked the actual price for this boiler online and the model they were going to install is only £800+VAT.
    Discuss!
i have been one of thier prefered contractors for years, and i get a standard fee to install there jobs. i would expect the top companies to be charging these price combi to combi say worchester 27cdi with standard flue and if the 22mm gas pipe is in situ expect to pay £2800
This price will include small amount of pipe-work,24hr wireless programer, powerclease the existing system.( please dont be mislead about power flushing as its not quite possible to power cleanse microbore pipe-work 8mm or 10mm We powerflush 15mm od pipe-work but chemically clean microbore)

Boilers usally carry a manufactures 5 year warrenty.
Salesmen/women can be very misleading the only thing they are 100% sure of is the commision they will make on each job.

I have been in the trade for over 45 years my 3 sons plus 2 grandsons are all in the trade.

Here is a fact that no one will tell you.
6 out of 10 boilers install are wrongly reccomended. and no matter what company you pick, they will be only interested in a sale, most times they recieve a 2nd revenue stream for reccommending certain manufactures boiler and it doesnt matter if if its not right for you.

In the uk there is is one company who offers a completely free technical survey, You see i used the words SURVEY not Sales they visit your home and carryout a complete survey and then run through a number of possible soloutions which will suit your requirements.Complety free of charge.

i would like to reccomend the company, but i dare not as i dont want to lose our contracts with the industrys leading companies

I will glady offer advice if required, Sorry no work undertaken

We install for all major companies. example ex balanced flue boiler which has a sq flue 30cm x 30cm (1ft sq) requires approx 10 exterior bricks to and say 3 breeze block for the interior wall which requires plastering.
We are paid a fixed price for this work which is just over 60.00 I am sorry i cant say anymore.

I really cant understand the whats happened to the industry, My father worked on old town gas i started work at the age of 14 years old 45 years in this industry and now retired off the tools i have left all the work for my 3 sons & 2 grandsons to do. In my day we treat customers with respect and gave them correct information and reccommended the correct soluotions to meet there needs.Today what you can expect from most installers (but not all) is bullshhit and overcharging. To many customers are intimadated by Salesmen to sign up for a new boiler. Here is a fact 6 out of every 10 customers are wrongly advised on what boiler thier property ( property and customer needs most be match otherwise it just doesnt work) whats the point of buying a rolls royce if you cant afford to run it?.
Beware if any sales person just talks sales and doesnt carry out any property checks.

advice freely given . no work undertaken

    good luck

Nobody can give customers the best advice over the phone, there are lots of things to check to give best advice.
Cheap is good but value for money is better in my opinion. No point buying the cheapest if it will not do what you need it to.
You need to keep your advise to yourself as you don,t know what you are talking about.

the job is worth £2,000 thats fair, i am an ex plumbing/gas/electrics instructor,
    with 25 years site experience
i recently changed a gas valve on a boiler that was around 50 years old i reckon it
will probably be a hundered years old when it needs another gasvalve
people have there boilers changed willy nilly beacause sadly they think they are
saving money as with solar panels ..... you will never recoup the original outlay no matter
what theese so called energy savers tell you, you are actually " going backwards " fitting
a modern boiler with its circuit boards, switches, thermostats, fans, air pressure switches valves, and the
miriad of controls they come with.......which incidently are mass produced in china adding to global
warming .....ps i have a ideal standard classic wall mounted cast iron boiler in my bungalow with a hot water cylinder and a honeywell ,3 port valve a grundfoss 15-60 pump and a roomstat and a horstman tiara mechanical programmer ... all very reliable karl:j

You seem to be an expert in I lot of things Karl, can you clear something up for me,
25 years site experience or instructor ? ..
Never heard it called instructor before.
Did you work in a collage ?
Never heard of a collage where the plumbing gas and electrics teachers are the same person.

  • have been quoted £4750 today by a BG to install a new boiler, as have no knowledge about how much these things normally cost, but seems very extreme, oh yes and that is with a 40% discount!!!! nearly fainted!! :(
