Hi

I have just moved into a one bedroom town house saturday just gone
Due to the previous tentant being badly in debt with EON they installed an prepayment meter
I called them Friday and explained and they said the meter would be reset so that I would start with a clean slate
However I am finding this hard to believe...I put £20 in the meter Saturday morning and this morning have got just over £10 left...that's £5 a day of electric...that could potentially be upto £150 a month on electric...baring in mind I live on my own in a small house...I have phoned EON and they won't help..any ideas???

Thank you in advance

Heating, electric showers, electric oven/hob - they can easily cost £5 per day.

£150 is not an unreasonable bill for winter. It depends on what the actual usage is - poke about the buttons on the meter to find out the readings and usage on a daily basis.

And E-on tend to have rubbish rates for electricity only - they have dual fuel tariffs that have a 21% discount so as you are ineligible for this your prices will probably be high.
You should shop around to see if other suppliers have cheaper tariffs. You can also arrange to change to a credit meter - either with Eon or a new supplier.
  • you have checked that it is reset?

Fiddle with the buttons until it cycles through some screens - there should be one displaying debt on the meter. Energy companies are conviently pretty hopeless at resetting debts on Pre-Pay meters.
  • It's just happened to my Mum who moved a few weeks ago. They cut her off and after she phoned again, they told her that she was £73 in credit but still didn't have any electricity!

Threaten to leave if they don't sort it. My one bedroom flat costs £40 a month for gas and electricity and I have central heating that is on a lot!

    Robbing robdogs!
    Good luck:o

i find it hard to believe you can run heating at such a low cost.
you could be running up debt without knowing it,this forum is full of such tales of woe

    Hi webbo1981,

It normally takes around 3 tops ups for the meter to be re-set (debt to be removed), this is due to E.ON sending a message to the terminal at the shop, this is then transferred to your meter when you top up with your key.

The quickest thing to do, is to top up the key with smaller amounts over 3 days.

I would also take the advice to check through the settings on the meter, this will show the unit price you are paying and if the debt is still collecting.

All thank you for your replies

I have to admit that after phoning EON yesterday they were very helpful. They talked me through the meter and pressing the button showed me that I am paying 12.95 pence per KW. Is this reasonable?
They assured me the debt has now been cleared and I put another £20 on it yesterday. I am down to £15 already, I really can't carry on paying like this
I have phoned other suppliers but they wont change the prepay meter becuase I haven't had an account with them before or I need to have a credit check and pay £50

Any further help/advice would be grateful

    Thank you

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply
I have a 'blue' button that I press and displays letters ranging from 'A' to 'K' I know one of them is 12.95 which is the rate per KW
Are you in a position to explain what letter represents what?

    Many thanks

RE;KIMYEOVIL,i would think £150 per month is way too much, that's £450 a quarter.
