I have an old computer and am having trouble with the bbc iplayer and the usual itv catchup. I have win xp pro 640 ram, but only a 700 cpu.
The strange thing is that on scotish tv it will play fine but not on the usual itv service or bbc iplayer (though videonation is fine)
on scotish tv below it plays fine
http://player.stv.tv/
Though I have reduced to lower bandwidth on the bbc iplayer still no joy.
what do you think is the problem is it my older cpu of 700? have all the latest java and flash 10, and have reinstalled both but still no joy.
thanks very much

Rams very low, you could certainly benefit from 1Gig or more
The cpu is very slow, a very good chance it is 'bottlenecking' (Bring up 'task manager' to see if its running flat out or not)
Simple things to check for are nasties ~
Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log COMPLETE here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds
and making sure you dont have things running that you shouldnt ~
reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click DO A SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE (Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log):idea:0 -
try adjusting your hardware acceleration settings.
a common graphics/video problem with older puters.Get some gorm.0 -
Given that iPlayer just worked fine when I tried it using a 1.6GHz Atom based netbook with 1GB memory and Intel 950 inbuilt graphics on a 3G broadband connection this sounds to me like a problem best fixed either with a credit card or watching your local freecycle until somebody wants to junk a machine that was built this century.0

I watch BBC iPlayer on my Netbook (Atom 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM) via wifi without too much trouble. It does pause every so often to 'catch up' but hardly noticeable.
More to the point, I also watch iPlayer on the Wii - which has a ~700MHz preocessor and ~ 200MB RAM ...0 -
Start Task Manager (ctr+alt+delete) ...then the performance tab there.
Then have a run though the TV sites and see how they use your CPU and memory...if there's a huge difference it will be obvious if your machine is struggling.
Maybe stopping some background processes can help free up resources. Most people have stuff they don't need star
ting when Windows does...wasting memory.
Is this for catching up, or for general viewing of some sort? Because tvcatchup.com is also a decent site for streamed TV in the UK for free outside the usual channel sites.
