X-Mas sales up 20% on this time last year

Play.com was on the news this morning, number of sales up 20% on last year.

Could be lots of things, more people shopping online, more people shopping play versus amazon, etc etc etc.

But it's interesting anyway. Thats a huge increase for them, no matter what the reason.

Big shift has been going here in retail. There is a lot of on line activity now. It`s been building up for a while. I would say in my industry you are far more likely to get a better price on line. As a family we are shopping a lot more on line. I am making some good savings.

    I've been Money Tipped!
My high end retail mole says (in store) slaes of the last year have been good. They might be able o annouce record figures. Big Euro intake and lots of Arab money. Just as those waned the domestic Christmas shop rolled in. So, its not just internet sales.

Confusing title Hamish. Play.com sales are up.

This was widely expected and they were talking about this last week. Internet sales are gaining year on year.

So that sales being up 20% doesnt mean 20% more items have been sold this xmas, or 20% higher value this xmas. Just that on the internet, as widely expected to continue year on year, big internet retailers are seeing more orders come to them, which may or may not, have otherwise been orders elsewhere.

I know mail order catologues were declining, so sales from those outlets may be being channeled through the internet.

We'll have to wait a while longer to see what the actual overall sales were, but I think it's widely regarded to be higher than last year, but there was a bit of a panic going on last year!

Went into Birmingham on Saturday. The place was heaving! However, queues at checkouts weren't too bad. People weren't carrying mounds of bags either. I think people are still spending, but being more careful about what they buy. Something that's needed rather than trashy tat. Or just one more expensive thing rather than loads of rubbish.

Which were down on the year before.

Yes it could be lots of things. Thanks for the insight and the thoughtful analysis.

Interesting, well to some I guess.

Hey I'm Spartacus, no... I'm Spartacus!

To be fair, Hamish needs his artistic license - it's all he's got nowadays.

Play.com will have great YoY numbers thanks to Woolworths and Zavvi going out of business. Doesn't tell us anything about the macro picture.
