what can i do about £170 bank charge

Hay

not quight shaw what to do about this just logged on to my bank (abbey) to find i have been charged for £170.88 for going over my overdraft.

I have been over it before and they sent me a letter before explaining how much and when it was coming out but it was only for £35!

I received no letter and and now im over my overdraft again because of the charges.

seems strange that they rocket up after the bank case...

is it worth going to to the bank or am i screwed and will have to find the money from sum where?

Are you sure this relates to going over your agreed limit? Seems a strangely specific amount (particularly the 88p), so I would suggest this is for something else.

Phone them and ask. If you have a letter confirming the charge, then that will make any differing charge easier to dispute.

    Congratulations, 2 + 2 = 5.

Of course it is worth going to the bank or at least contacting them. Either you have neglected to mention something, or there is a serious discrepancy that Abbey need to clear up. I'm not saying the charge is not legitimate, it may well be, but you need to get Abbey to clarify.
Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.
  • Hi the 88p come from £5.88 interest on the charges..

i should have worded it better its not for 1 transaction its for:

    3 unpaid DD
    8 instant overdraft fees

This all came around from when i deposited money in to my account the stupid person on the desk doubled what i had put in by mistake then the bank took double that out by mistake...

I used to be regularly having problem but have managed to get my self pretty much on the strait and narrow but this seems exsessive! and £170 is going to put me back to square one
  • Hi i have alot of experience with abbey you have some options

1- if you havent had charges refunded in the last 12 months they will refund them as a "goodwill gesture"

    2- (i done this once)
call the call center ask them what this money is coming out your account they will say its charges them say you never recived a statment for this and as they have not notified you you want them refunded.
Abbey will go on to say no but just stay on the line ask to speak to a manager and bang on how its bad banking practice bla bla bla and eventually they will give in (just make sure you dont get of the phone till you get what you want!!

3- would be to right a letter of complaint stating what you said above about their branch staff screwing your cash up what led to charges and demand them back then go through the whole complaints process loooooong.

It seems as though you need a quick fix so go options 1 or 2!! good luck!

If the bank charges occured purely because of an error by the bank, you would have no problem getting them cancelled.
    However, I doubt they were...;)

Well simply point this out to your bank rather than wasting time posting about it here :)
