Can i claim family tax credit?

Can anyone help me? My partner is self employed and his books showed him earning approx £35k last year and I am currently on maternity leave but earn £21k normally. I understand that we are under the limit for claiming as this is our first child and he is now 6 months. My partner says that it is not worth us claiming it because as soon as I put the application in he will be called upon to put all his paperwork in for his business for last year which will mean he will end up having his VAT bill earlier rather than later. Is he right? Times are very lean at the moment and the extra £13ish per week would come in very handy but if my partner is right I don't want to land him with a huge VAT bill for the sake of £13 per week. If anyone can let me know if he is right I would be really grateful. Thanks

I don't see how the claim will increase liability for VAT. If he owes it, he will have to pay it.
And if £13 a week will really help you, go for it as its your entitlement.

Your tax credit application is not going to affect your partner's VAT record and having to pay it early. it is completely separate.
I would claim now as they only backdate 3 months. If yor income is lower this year you may be entitled to a little bit more from them as well.0
