Crackling television! Help!

Our television has started crackling - like the speakers have a loose connection but wapping central to side speakers etc... doesn't change it and turning down the sound doesn't get rid of the noise either.

Its a Phillips - about 3 years old - a normal tube tv and we can't find a model number (its really heavy and kind of jammed in a space so I can't get round the back :( )

I suppose my questions are
a) is the cost of having speakers fixed more expensive than just buying a new tv generally?
b) would buying external speakers - like a home surround sound cheapo system, cut the signal to the existing speakers and stop the noise?

Sorry to be so vague! Any suggestions most appreciated.

best idea is to phone a local TV shop.. NOT a chain or large company, a local shop will tell you whats wrong, and probably wont rip you off. They might be able to give you a simple solution, or you might have to take the TV in.

i might be wrong with this, but i dont think external speakers will solve your problem, yes, they may work, but the built in speakers will still be on.

my tip though, try smacking the speakers, since there already busted you've got nothing to lose... and plus, hlf my electronic stuff has been fixed by a quick punch on the side ;)

You know, it comes and goes - i.e. it happened a few months ago then nothing until now, so with my meagre understanding of such things (I'm more into building computers so not touched a soldering iron for years!), i reakon it might be a loose wire that flaps around, heats up then reattaches for a while and is fine... In which case I would hope it might be relatively easy to fix.
