can connect wireless but not via ethernet even though it states connection made??

Im sure this is something really simple but basically with my laptop i can connect to my router wirelessly fine but when connected via an ethernet cable web pages dont load although everything states its connected???
When you attempt to load a page the load bar starts to work in the bottom right hand corner to indicate its loading but doesnt go any further than halfway and never loads?
My security programme is ESET and have attempted disabling the personal firewall in the hope this may help but no joy.
Have tried another laptop connected up via ethernet cable and that laptop worked fine loading pages problem free??
To me this seems odd but could be relatively simple as it states connection, can be prooved to work fine on another laptop so it must be something on my laptop stopping it going any further??
Could anyone please lend some much needed advice pls? would be much appraciated
thanks
Paul

Do you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router perhaps? May need ot check the router settings.
Also when you say everything is connected . is your wireless still connected to the router or are you disabling it (taking the card / dongle out - or disabling the onboard wireless).
Have you checked in "Network Connections" to make sure that the correct Ethernet connection is enabled and is connected and not blocked by a firewall.
Also have a check that your Ethernet port lights are on both on the laptop and router.
Can you do an ipconfig/all check in command line?
(Usually START > RUN the type in "cmd" when the black box comes up - type in ipconfig/all)

  • Another possibility is, you have a static IP address set in your LAN card settings...

to check this do the following...

    Unplug the wired connection

connect with the wireless so it works
open a command prompt (Start -> run -> type in cmd and Press OK_
(If using Vista or 7, type cmd into the search box and press enter)

type in ipconfig and then press enter

now you will get a list of the settings for all your network adaptors, look for the wirelss one and see what it states for the IP Address or IPv4 Address
(usually it will be 192.168.XXX.XXX (Where the XXX's are a numbers between 1 and 254)

When you have this information, make a note of it, and then disconnect the wireless and connect the cable

Wait 30 seconds and then repeat the ipconfig step above, but look for the wired connection.

Are the first three sections if the IP address the same?
