best phone/bb deal. moving home.

i currently have sky tv, talk and broadband. i do not have a phone line in my name as my curent flat mate pays for the bt line. Anyway i am moving house next week and need to get a phone line installed. i noticed that BT offer free connection on an 18 month deal but you have to make 10 calls. that would mean losing sky talk, which would put an extra £5 per month on my sky bill.

basically what is the best deal for me. i will be keeping sky tv but am not fussed about phone and broadband providers. also i don't use the phone line to make cals.

    Hi Pukkapie
Is there a line at all in the new house? Is the charge for having a new line installed or for reinstating one that was already there?
I think if it's for installing a new line then your best bet will be the BT offer of free connection; as you will need a BT line for for your Sky.
If there is a BT line already there and it just needs reinstating have you asked Sky how much they would charge for this? Line rental would then be £11.00 per month

  • thanks for your response. it is a new flat so i doubt there is a bt line already in place.
you don't actually need a BT line to watch sky tv as the signal comes through the ariel.

I would check with whoever is building the flats as sometimes they are fitted as standard now
Sky normally say that the box needs to be connected to a BT line? Or is this not true when you are moving house and only when you take out a new contract? Perhaps you need to check.

Sky comes via a satellite dish, not via an aerial. Connection of your Sky box to a phone line is required for the first 12 months of a Sky subscription service, unless you opt out of this at sign up, in which case you will have to pay a one off fee of £20.

honestly a bt lne is not required for sky tv. i had sky in 2 different flats with no phone line for ages. when i move into my new flat i will take my current box with me, plug it into the socket in the wall and watch sky straight the way.

anyway, back on point the new flat is built by redrow and i know it is setup for a BT line, it just needs someone from BT to prob flick a sitch or something. will this be classed installing a new line?

    thanks.

Yes it will be classed as a new line as it is a new build flat

A phone line connection is contractually required for Sky subscription services, unless you pay the opt out fee. Whether some installers don't bother to enforce this another matter.
It makes no difference if the line is already physically installed or not, what you are charged for is reconnection. If it's a new build then it will need connecting or reconnecting. BT are currently offering free connection, but this requires you to take 18m line rental.

  • think i will ring up sky, explain that i will cancel because i will be getting the 18 month bt free connection so will not continue with sky broadband, then see if they will offer me a good deal
