I'm an ACCA Accountant. Your best thing to do is phone ACCA and speak to them, get the number through the website, they are really helpful. You will need to register soon to sit in June 2010. The prices for registration are ok, exemptions are expensive and exams are fairly ok to sit, if you need a special centre ie if there's none in your area they charge you extra to sit locally!
BPP are fab the courses are excellent especially the weekend revision course, they get you through and have fab pass rates and well worth the money.
You will nedd 2 year practical experience though signed off by an accountant before you can actually qualify. You will find little employers willing to take you on if you have sat and passed the exams but have no experience.
Thanks. Yeah agree my best bet is to talk to ACCA.
Guess it's a dumb question, what is revision course? tks0 -
There are week revision courses and weekend ones. I went on the weekend ones held by BPP in Glasgow, could afford the week ones as I had to pay20% contribution and my employer paid 80%.
They are taught courses by fully qualified staff and they go over the things you really need to know and the patterns the exams seem to take. they also drill into you technique's that get you the extra points to get the 50 out of 100 pass mark, doesn't sound much to get 50 out of 100 but you would be surprised!!
Couldn't have done it first time without BPP Glasgow, paid around £300 per weekend course but worth every penny to pass first time and not read the same mind numbing book again!!0 -
It certainly helps to go to actual lectures. Not to mention tutors can make me work harder  Just need to find the money now..
What about computer based exams? On the website, it says it is more flexible than paper based exams? Do many people take CBE?0 -
CBE can only be taken for the first level of exams, (some not all I think, I was exempt from level one, from your degree you probably will be too) after this its in an exam hall only. Well it was in my day and pretty sure its not changed.0

I would suggest finding an employer who is willing to support you say 50/50 or something. This will give you experience also which you will need to. Google trainee accountants in your area and see what comes up, worth a go as a lot of money to find otherwise.
Good luck its a long road..but I can tell you first hand the benefits after qualifying are weel worth the hours, days, weeks and months of painful study!0 -
Thanks a lot Ally for your advice. As they say no pain no gain. I need a challenge to keep me going. ACCA it is.0

I will call them tomorrow to find out. The link at the website of exemption still doesn't work0

Hall based exams are only twice a year. For June exams you have to register with ACCA by the end December. BUT
if you don't get the exemption then you are going to sit CBE exams anyway - and these you can take whenever you are ready (but these are available only for the first level).
Once you have the first 3 under the belt I have no doubt you will be able to find a job.
It took me two weeks from passing my first three exams to get a job.
Good luck:T0
