How do I find out if I have a home phone number?

I moved into a flat about a year ago and am currently looking into getting wireless broadband. The only problemis that all the sites I've looked at are asking for my home phone number and I don't know if I've got one There is a line in one of the rooms but I have never used it. Where do I find out if it's live or if there is a phone number applied to it?

Plug in phone.
Dial 17070.

See what it says. If it's "live", it'll give the phone number.

LeeSouthEast's suggestion will work.

But it's 99% likely that, if you're not paying a subscription to BT/Virgin Media/Cable and Wireless/Sky/etc, the phone line is not activated.

I'm in the same position, want to join tiscali with cashback but have no number. Is there anyone who will reconnect me for a one off fee so i'm not in a contract?

Beware of putting your phone number into a broadband suppliers availability checker - they seem to take this as an invitation to spam you with sales calls.

If you only want to check availability Sam Knows is a recommended independent site
