paypal fraud

hi

ive just had my bank statement today, and my switch card has been used fraudulently to purchase goods on ebay through paypal. there are three payments, all made on 23rd May, for 3 different amounts, totalling over £200. i have rung paypal, who have told me another account has been set up in my name, they have frozen this account and are getting back to me.

have rung my bank who have cancelled my switch card, and are sending me forms out to go back to switch for them to request a chargeback from paypal.

two things:

firstly, does anyone know how likely it will be for me to get the money back, and is there anything else i need to do (other than not use my old paypal a/c, or ebay til its sorted.

secondly, on current accounts board, someone else has posted that this happened to them on the same date, 23rd May. is this just a coincidence, or has this happened to anyone else on or around the same date?

it all seems very odd.

thanks for reading this.

xx

Not nice. But the thing to point out is this is not PayPal fraud but Bank/Credit Card fraud. PayPal has just been the conduit the fraudster has used to spend the money.

If I were you I would start looking close to home for the culprit. My son had his card borrowed (nicked and returned) by a boy at school who used to buy a PSP which he then had sent to himself at the school.....sooo dumb!

I’m certain you’ll get your money back. I’m not certain how long it’ll take. The worse thing that could happen is that the bank decides they want to investigate that you didn’t make the transactions. That could drag the whole process out.

I’m not sure that you have to wait for anything to be “sorted”. Clearly, you can’t make a Switch/Maestro purchase until you get your new cad, but a fraudster shouldn’t have been able to get your card details from a compromised PayPal or eBay account, as they never display full card numbers.

Every time you use your card online, you are, be definition, giving out enough information to allow the recipient to use that information to go on and make fraudulent transactions. However, you might want to look that the information didn’t leak out from yourself. Make sure you’ve checked that your computer is free of malicious software. Changing all your important passwords would also be a good precaution. Make sure that you don’t put sensitive paperwork straight out for collection – shred it, or, at least, tear it up. And, as Hintza’s suggested, you need to consider who might have had physical access to your card.
