Do you have to sign for passport delivery

Expecting a renewed UK passport any day now, but I was wondering, it's sent by secure delivery (with a company called DX, I think) and does anyone know whether they just put it through the letterbox or actually ask you to sign for it?

I may be out today and tomorrow and need to get a visa arranged quickly so it would be helpful if they just put it through the letterbox otherwise I may not get it until Wednesday :o

I didn't have to sign when I applied for mine and the kids.

They just plopped through the letterbox!

Ah, but maybe you have to sign if you have paid the extra for secure (tracked) delivery as I'm sure that is an option?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

we paid for the secure delivery and they just popped it through our letterbox...seemed a bit questionable to us, but it got to us OK.
Does remembering a time that a certain degree of personal responsibility was more or less standard means that I am officially old?

  • Brilliant thanks! I didn't pay extra for any other delivery and it says it'll be sent secure delivery so hopefully it'll be waiting when I get back from work tomorrow!

    Thanks for your replies

I had a couple of issues when i applied for my renewal a couple of months ago so ended up speaking several times to the passport office and was cutting things a bit fine with my impending holiday.

When i spoke to them they explained to me that although a courier does deliver it they only get a signiture if the letterbox doesn't look to be secure such as a seperate mailbox at the end of a drive or a block of flats. Basically if you live in a house with a normal letterbox on the front door they should just pop through the door.
