Today I read an advertisement for HSBC about a new regular saver account
and was really impressed by the fact that they gave all the necessary details for a person to really understand the investment. I haven't seen this clarity before.

Although I have never used one I believe a lot of people have misunderstood the regular saver accounts. So many banks now have a bad name that I have started to mistrust all of them. Having said that, I have been with the Co-op (Smile) for many years for everyday banking and they give excellent service. In the old days they used to offer good rates on bonds but then had poor rates after offering the best rate for a cash ISA and reducing it shortly afterwards.

Like the OP I was worried about money I had in Kapthing but was paid out eventually. I am now very cautious about banking and certainly did not expect the crash and subsequent bail-outs. Diana Wright of The Sunday Times has said that she gets more complaints about Abbey than any other bank. There are a few I would not touch with a barge pole.

It is true that, over time, equities do better than bank deposits.
My all time best investment was in Fidelity Special Situations. It is a highly regarded company with top ratings and now Anthony Bolton who managed this fund is coming back to run a China Fund from Hong Kong. This will be one worth investing in!

Many banks are now actually very good at this, not just HSBC, e.g.

After the mess in Dubai, I would avoid anything with an Islamic label on it.

Am I missing something here, or is this not a British Bank? It's listed on the London Stock Exchange & its headquarters are in Birmingham.

I'd have thought the clue was in the name!
