moving electricity supply cable, tails and CU
Hi,
Planning on moving into a house. Seen that the consumer unit is placed in the lounge for some odd reason. I want it to be moved at a location under the stairs as I plan to revamp the place and wiring anyway...
So this means, moving the consumer unit (CU), meter tails and electricity supply cable. NOW I AM AWARE I cant be doing this myself do not worry, and I know that the electricity board will move at cost, the tails.
However, is it possible to have the actual supply cable extended to another location in house? Its about 6 metres in total and rough costs if anyone has experience would be appreciated, to know whether i am just wasting time thinking about it.
Many Thanks.

From what I know they wont extend the supply cable, they will install a new one. The cost of that will depend on were you want the meter and where the nearest main supply cable is. For a neighbour it cost about £2-3k becuase they had to dig a 15m trench to put a cable in (the meter was moved outside 6 feet from were it was).IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

What Spiro says. They almost certainly will not extend the cable inside the house, but will take a new cable from the intended meter point to the nearest part of the main or the existing service cable. If your house is a semi or terrace and your proposed meter position is on the party wall, it may require a considerable run inside the house. They may be reluctant or even refuse. You need to check with the supply company what is now acceptable.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If the cut-out and meter are on an external wall, have you considered having them relocated to into an external meter box on the other side of the wall? You could have a main isolation switch/protection inside the box with a cable run to the CU under the stairs.0
