The issue is that someone with malicious intent could easily re-seal the box after adding something rather nasty to the bottles of toiletries which is why they aren't accepted as returns.

The store could use some discretion here but they don't have to

The same return policy should apply to fragrance gift sets bought from well known fragrance stores as they are easily opened and tested.

This is the first time I've heard of a store refusing to exchange/refund a fragrance set.

I had returned a bottle of shampoo to a store before as I picked up the wrong one. If it was only a few pound then I wouldnt of bothered, but the shampoo was around £15. The store exchanged it no problem.

It just makes me mad that I was told I could return the items before I purchased them.

    .

The vast majority of stores won't return toiletries, some may make an exception for sealed and some specialist fragarance only retailers may accept an exchange a refund

Debenhams and M&S will only accept them at each store's discretion and they must be 100% sure that the seal hasn't been broken.

Whilst it's unfortuanate you were told what you were at the till, I've no reason to doubt you, you have to see if from the store's position. The policy has been in place for 20 odd years and with success. I've had zero complaints on it from the 20 stores that I'm in control of. I can't see HO Cust Serv overruling the store unless they feel the store or floor manager has acted inapropriately as the new guy in charge there is rather mean spirited!
