I was in the DR this summer and it was fab - intend to go again! I took a mixture of both but next time I'll just take dollars - when getting from Travel Agent ask for a number of smaller notes as we "spent" most of our cash on tips!
have a good time it's a fab place - where are you going?0 -
Went there last year it was fab. Take us dollars small bills, and pencils/pens and any other stationery for local schools you will certainly visit on any tours you make.Have a great time. :beer:0

Hi Returned a few weeks ago,we took a mixture of US and Dom Pesos because they will give you Pesos change if you pay by US Dollars and i can advise it is difficult to ensure they have not taken a non intended tip ??.We paid the airport taxes in Us Dollars it works out slightly cheaper Have a good holiday0

We just took US dollars to Punta Cana. If you are going all-inclusive and tend to just stay put there is very little need to spend anything! We spent most on trips which were very expensive, (speedboat/snorkelling trip, jeep trip inland)....and a few trinkets to bring home, (junk jewellery, coffee, couple of paintings, that horrible local drink with herbs...'Mamajuana')
Have a fab time :j0 -
You guys should try the Common Wealth Of Dominica much nicer. Good for hiking an abundance of water falls and the hot springs are out of this world, you also got whale watching and so many sites to visit.
I would definitely say its the most unspoilt island in the West Indies
Have a fab time too0 -

We were in the RUI complex and loved it - I spent the £200 I took with me on massages and jewellery! OH spent approx £30 mostly on tips - so can be as cheap or expensive as ypu want since it's AI
have fun0 -
The currency used in the country is the peso.
However, if you buy Dominican pesos in the UK you will get a very poor exchange rate. Once you are there it is easy to exchange US dollars for pesos, or you can surely look around and find a way to change pounds there.
And I would love to visit Dominica, but I fear that air fares there are a lot higher than to the Dominican Republic.0 -
I've done quite a bit of research for our trip in January, and agree.. Dollars are your best bet - you'll only really need local currency for local buses or a couple of the smaller activities such as the Puerto Plata cable-car.
I'd really really love to visit Dominica, but sadly the cost of flights and lack of cheapo packages meant it wasn't feasible this trip. Hopefully at some point we'll get a cheap 2 week package in St Lucia and spend a week over in Dominica, as the ferry seems the cheapest way to get into the country.0 -
