Confused re final gas bill from Npower

Hi there,

I was wondering if someone could explain this to me as I am totally confused by my last Npower bill.

On my previous bill dated June 2009 I was £51.87 in credit and my month DD for gas was £64. The final bill reads as follows and they have been given all correct meter readings.

first 1301 @ 7.659p = £99.64
next 1322@ 2.488p = £32.89
cost of gas used this period = £132.53
Dual Fuel discount = - £50.00
Subtotal (exc VAT) = + £82.53
VAT @ 5% on £82.53 = + £4.12
Gas charges this period = + 86.65
Payments rec'd with thanks = + £285.22
Payments rec'd with thanks = - £320.00
Your previous bill = - £51.87
Account balance = £0.00 credit

Now here is where I get confused:

If I was initially in credit of £51.87 and I have used £86.65 of gas during the period then I should only have had £34.78 to pay over the period. I have paid £64 p/m for my gas which is a total of £320. Therefore should I not be in credit and owed the sum of £285.22 from them? The balance says £0.00 in credit but there is no mention of any amount repayable to me.

Please can you tell me if I am right here or am I being incredibly thick somewhere down the line?

Seems odd to me but I may well be looking at it in the wrong way.I would have thought it should have been

    Cost of gas £132.53
    Vat @ 5% £ 6.63

    Total £139.16

Less Credit £51.87 (this already incudes VAT) from previous bill

Cost of gas for this bill £ £87.23

    Less £50.00 D.D. discount = £37.23

    Payments recd £320.00

Leaves you credit balance of £282.77.

No doubt thats wrong too but makes sense to me.

    Whilst it is confusing!

I think that the £285.22 was for a bill for a period from June to say, Sep or Oct(which they presumably didn't send)

    Thus:
    June to Sep/Oct bill - £285.22
This bill to date £ 86.65
    Total £371.87
    Credit from June £ 51.87
    Total £320.00
    less payments £320.00
    Total £000.00

It is not likely that you you have only used 2,623kWh from June to Nov or you wouldn't be paying a DD of £64 monthly for such tiny consumption.

So I suspect there is a missing bill. However you can easily check by comparing the end meter reading in June, with the start meter reading on this £86.65 bill.

The only thing that is wrong is that it is very difficult to envisage any final bill being zero when paying by DD - but with Npower!!!!
  • Hi,

I get billed every six months so two bills a year. Last bill was dated 24 June 2009 and covered the period 29 Dec - 22 June, current final bill dated 3 Dec and covers 22 June - 30 Nov so there are definitely no missing bills. All the meter readings are actual and not estimated. End meter reading for June is the start meter reading for this current bill.

The only thing I can think of is that, as I was a dual fuel customer, whether there was a big debit on the electricity and the amount has been transferred over to that.

That would make sense, and explain why it was a nice round zero on the final bill.

Whichever way the £285.22 has been used to pay a bill.
  • Yes, that may be the case as I have not received the final electricity bill yet so I will give them a ring monday morning to run through it with them.

    Thanks!
