worming & flea advice please for my cat!

:T:Thi everyone....some advice needed pleeessseee!!

bought some sherleys wormer tablets for my cat, gave her the first lot of tablets(for roundworm) crunched up & mixed in her food-she ate the lot. then a week later, tapeworm tablets offered in the same way, she point blank refused to eat it this time, even though I left the food out for ages, ended up throwing it away.

went to pet shop for some advice what to do...the advice given was to purchase some drontal tablets and start again in 3 weeks time , and to wrap her up tightly in a blanket, open her mouth and pop tablet in,stroking her throat until she swallows it.

q1- is that the correct way to administer the tablets?
q2-is 3 weeks long enough for the tablets already given to get out of her system?
q3-why do they sell sherleys tablets if they are 'less effective' than drontal??
q4-is it obvious when the cat has fleas? ive been using bob martin spot on drops on the back of her neck but now im wondering if they will be effective as they were cheaper to purchase than other brands.

thanks everyone who could give some advice- much appreciated

The general concensus seems to be that the flea treatments you can buy in a pet shop are nowhere near as effective as the ones you can get from the vet. At the end of the day it is the same for human medicines - the strongest/ newest medications are often only available from your family doctor not from a supermarket. You can now get flea and wormer all-in-one from the vet, which solves the problems of trying to administer lots of medications! :T The most cost effective solution is to buy a prescription from your vet and buy the actual medication online.

  • I agree with Fire Fox. I would advise frontline for fleas and drontal for worming. I worm my cats by opening their mouths and keeping them closed until they swallow (not as mean as it sounds!) If I put the tablets in the food it will go ignored and have to chucked, and the tablets aren't cheap!

I was in a similar situation recently as I bought a flea collar for Pepsi, only to find out shortly afterwards that general consensus is that they don't work  Why does everyone seem to sell them if they're useless? It also means that I can't use any other flea treatment on her for 3 months which is pretty annoying.

Although I have to say it's not as bad as this which I found recently - http://www.hartzvictims.org/ A flea treatment which is widely available and has killed or seriously harmed loads of cats. How on earth are they still allowed to sell it?!

I treated a cat recently with Permethrin poisoning as the owner had accidentily used her dog Bob Martin spot on instead of the cats Frontline ( I would comment on the madness of buying !!!! stuff for the dog and good stuff for the cat...). Basically the cat almost died, seizuring, tremors, muscle fasiculations-the lot. Luckily my questioning and persistence and the owner looking through the bin gave us a diagnosis. Luckily it survived but they commonly die as it is toxic and no antidote. This happens SO frequently but Bob Martins spot on for dogs is sold regularly in pet shops and supermarkets yet it is lethal for cats? And it's crap and doesn't work.

How to Give a CAT a Tablet

Pick the cat up and cradle in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth pop pill into it, allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind the sofa. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away. Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call partner in from garden. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get partner to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from the foil wrap. Make note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered 'Dolton' figurines from hearth and set to one side for gluing later. Wrap cat in large towel and get partner to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pills not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply plaster to partners forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbours shed and get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door onto neck to leave head showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon and flick pill down throat with elastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus jab. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom. Ring fire brigade to retrieve cat from tree across the road and apologise to neighbour who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid the cat.

Take last pill from foil wrap. Tie cats front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table, find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed and pry cat's mouth open with a small spanner. Push pill into mouth followed by a large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour a pint of water down throat to wash down pill.

Get partner to drive you to the Emergency Room and sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearms and removes pill remnants from right eye. Call at furniture shop on way home to order new table.

Arrange for RSPCA to collect cat. Ring local pet shop to see if they have any hamsters.

  • Gettingready-that is sooo funny!!!! you have made me laugh. thankyou you've made my day!
  • did anyone know whether 3 weeks is long enough to leave it before attempting to start again with drontal? i don't want to overdose her. the man in pet shop made me sign to say I would'nt give her it until january. but when i asked him how often i should worm/flea treat her, he did'nt know the answer so now i am doubting he knows what he's on about.!
  • I recently invested in a pill 'inseter' from the vet it was about £1.50 you attach the pill put the whole contraption into the cats mouth and release the pill, better than using your fingers!

You can worm your animals as often as you want, they're pretty safe stuff. In an ideal world you should worm your animals every month but that would be impossible to implement so the drug companies did studies and worked out they every three months on average worked quite well.
