Been quoted £45 for an hours labour to sort out what I'm sure is a simple problem on an Apple I-Book by a local computer shop.
Does this seem steep?

Depends on the issue. Laptops are generally more tricky to repair and not everyone who can repair a PC will attempt a laptop. Apple products will probably be even harder, never taken one appart so not sure, possibly require different tools to open the case with out damage. All that will be factored into the cost. You could ask what the £45 includes and is that their standard rate.New PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0

Laptop repairs are rarely simple, because even if the repair is simple, getting to the parts is not. Most reputable shops will give you a firm quote based on an initial inspection which is about £25. If you then go ahead, that cost is offset from the quote. I wouldn't use somewhere that simply quoted an hourly rate-not if they have seen the laptop. No free lunch, and no free laptop

No different from any other trade then. There are always rogue elements that show up the rest. Before anyone hands over a laptop for repair they should watch this feature from Sky News on YouTube. Think about what you have on your hard disk and how much do you trust the people you're giving it to?
Sometimes noseiness pays off though, otherwise what might Gary Glitter be getting upto here in the UK if he wasn't caught out?New PV club member. 3.99kW system. Solar Edge with 14 x 285W JA Solar panels. 55° West from south and 35° pitch.0
