well most people phone up tradesmen and get quotes for the job then go from there
so be looking at a plumber for the shower and his time to run a cold pipe from the nearest cold water pipe and fit the shower then also have to run a electrician fit a new line straight from main fuse board in the house bearing in mind you will need space in board for its own fuse as showers use a fair amount of electric in there own right and if there is no spare fuse space then you would need a new distrubition board.
First thing i would look at elecric issue then go from there once the electrics are in you can then get the plumber in.
but cost wise you could be looking at if nothing is in £150 as a guess then if you start needing a new consumer unit all depends what u need bear in mind if you do allow for anything else you might need electrically in the future as well0 -
The plumbing is often the easier part of this operation.
Fat cable isnt cheap especially in long runs and if things need changing at th consumer unit end then it mounts up. Also earthing upgrades may be necessary etc. Electric & water..this is one area not to skimp..get it done properly not cheaply.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
I always like to price up the parts myself so I know how much the labour costs.
The best thing to fit is a specific shower fuse box next to the main one, this one is ideal for £25
Then it needs cabling. for short runs on an 8.5kw shower 6mm should do but if its a long run I would use 10mm. (8.5kw isn't that powerful if it struggles in winter to warm the colder mains water you may want to upgrade to 9.5kw or 10.5kw - if you have a 10mm cable thats possible, with 6mm its at the limit for 8.5kw)
25 metres of 6mm cost about £35 and 25m of 10mm costs about £50.
So the fusebox needs fixing, the cable running from the supply to the shower (floorboards lifting perhaps) you will need to look at the route the cable could go. Then the plumbing, basic pipe and joint parts are pretty cheap it depends how hard it is to run. Then the shower needs fitting.
I would say at least £200ishEuropean for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.0 -
my SIL had a shower replaced last year. the local plumber charged her 25 quid (he was working next door) and the sparkys bill was 50 quid.
that was just a straight, like for like, job though.
so your budget 150/200 would be more like.Get some gorm.0 -
Sorry to bring back this thread but we are looking to have a shower installed as well. Now my concern is the wiring regs for the electrical side of this. As the work is being done in the bathroom, I'm under the impression that Building Regs approval would be needed. The consumer unit we have has MCB breakers but no overall RCD. As this does not comply with the latest regs, would this need to be replaced or could the shower be connected to a spare 40A MCB and then go through a separate 30mA RCD? Would this comply with the regs? We would be getting an electrician in to do the work so that side of the regs would be covered.
Thanks0 -
What you suggest (add RCD for shower circuit) is permissable, feasible and most often the way it's done. Speak to your electrician and stop being concerned. Make sure he is Part P registered as this is notifiable work. He will notify via his Part P scheme, nothing for you to do.
