Car tax query

Hey,

I have a friend who has a car which hs is looking to sell however unfortunately the tax expired on the 1st of this month. He doesn't drive the car anymore and it is currently parked outside his house. Because he doesn't drive the car anymore he is not insured to drive this as he obviouslly doesn't want to pay out whilst not using the car.

When you tax your car the car needs to be covered by insurance...does anyone have any advise on how he could get his car tax without having to fork out £100's on insurance?

Also is it possible/are there any repurcussions if he were to take out insurance say just for a day, bought his car tax and then cancelled this? I have been told Kwik Fit offer a £10 deposit for new insurance. Could he theoretically take out this type of insurance and then cancel the next day before having to pay a premium for the month?

On a seperate note, if he is the car owner, does any car insurance need to be in his name? Would it say be possible for someone else who would be able to claim cheaper insurance be able to take insurance out on the car (baring in mind they wouldn't be the owner/registered main driver) and this be valid to cover the tax?

Any advise would be much appretiated. Thanks.

why does he need to tax it? Is he trying to sell it?
Indecision is the key to flexibility :)
  • Yeah the car is up for sale so he would prefer to sell it taxed with a full MOT as this looks more appealing to buyers.
  • Pay a deposit you would still be signing up for the whole years insurance. If you then cancel, you'll probably be charged admin fees and cancellation fees and even short term insurance fees.
For selling purposes, would it not be better to have it insured for test drives? Perhaps a 1 month policy would be better and save money in the long run.
A valid tax disc will only stop busybodies reporting it for being untaxed. The police ANPR cameras will still know it isnt insured.
  • Is there a cheap way to get a monthly insurance? Does anyone have cheap monthly rolling insurance they can reccomend?

I don't think he will drive it at all if it isn't insured, so the police cameras shouldn't be an issue. I think he just simply wants to know the cheapest/easiest way to tax his car without having to take out long/expensive insurance he won't benefit from.

He needs to tax and insure it anyway if it is on the road.

If the car isnt taxed it should be sorned or when he does get round to taxing it he may have to pay back tax and a fine.
I would also consider having valid insurance for test drives(some peoples insurance doesnt cover them to drive other cars that is not insured on its own policy.
 Am thinking of a new one:beer:

Mot yes agree with ,tax no

also as been mentioned ,get it SORN ,and quick
    Have a nice day :)
