AVI videos washed out colour

I have recently noticed that avi videos are appearing washed out when viewing.
At first I thought it was just some recent ones but then went back and viewed some older ones which were fine fine before to find they too appear washed out.

I have not to my knowledge changed any settings. It is not the monitor as everything else is fine.

I play the videos in media player and have checked the brightness settings there, but they are at the default "0". In order to get the video to a viewable brightness I have to take the value down to about -30, but this resets when I close media player.

Other video formats, mpg etc are not affected. Any ideas?

Have you got any codec packs or something like ffdshow installed? These might have their own colour settings so if applicable check them.

Also check the video driver settings, e.g. Nvidia control panel allows you to make changes to colour which will just affect videos. The fact it only affects some file types suggests it might be codec related though.

Ok, I will look into the codec settings.
As mentioned before I have not made any changes, so I am not sure how tis would have happened
